Over het Kwartet
Willem Marinus Dudok was een bekende Nederlandse architect. Ook was hij een groot muziekliefhebber: hij kwam uit een muzikale familie en componeerde in zijn vrije tijd.
'Meer dan aan alle bouwkunstenaars heb ik aan de componisten te danken', schreef hij. 'Ik voel diep de gemeenschappelijke basis van de muziek en de architectuur: ze ontlenen immers beide haar waarde aan de juiste maatverhoudingen.'
De leden van het Dudok Kwartet leerden elkaar in kennen bij het Ricciotti Ensemble. Gedurende de eerste jaren werd het kwartet gecoached door Ferdinand Erblich en Kees Koelmans.
In januari 2009 vormde zich de huidige samenstelling van het kwartet. Kort daarop begon het kwartet aan een twee-jarige post-graduate opleiding bij het Alban Berg Quartett aan de Hochschule für Musik in Keulen. Vanaf september 2011 studeert het Dudok Kwartet als hét voltijd-strijkkwartet aan de Nederlandse Strijkkwartet Academie, bij Marc Danel. Masterclasses volgden zij bij de leden van het Párkányi Quartet, het Takács Quartet, het Ysaye Quartet en het Prazak Quartet.
Op het gebied van hedendaagse muziek werkte het Dudok Kwartet samen met Mark-Anthony Turnage, Kaaija Saariaho, Calliope Tsoupaki en Max Knigge aan de uitvoering van hun composities.
Ook verzorgde het kwartet de wereld- en Nederlandse première van het Concert voor Strijkkwartet en Orkest van Julius Röntgen. Ze gaven concerten op het Gergiev Festival, de NJO Muziekzomer, het Grachten Festival en het Linari Classic Festival in Toscane. Voorts traden zij op in het Concertgebouw, het Muziekgebouw aan het IJ, Muziekcentrum Frits Philips, de Stadsgehoorzaal in Leiden en in Vredenburg te Utrecht.
Het Dudok Kwartet won eerste prijzen op het 1e Internationaal Strijkkwartet Concours in Radom in 2011 en op het 27e Charles Hennen Internationaal Kamermuziek Concours in 2012.
The Dudok Kwartet consists of Judith van Driel (violin), Marleen Wester (violin), Mark Mulder (viola), David Faber (violoncello).
The members of the quartet met when they played in the Ricciotti Ensemble. During their first years the ensemble received coachings by, amongs others, Ferdinand Erblich and Kees Koelmans. They participated in master-classes with the Párkányi Quartet, the Takács Quartet, Ysaye Quartet and the Prazak Quartet.
Since January 2009 the ensemble consists of its current members. From 2009 till 2011 the Dudok Kwartet has studied with the Alban Berg Quartett at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne. In September 2011 they started their full-time studies at the Dutch String Quartet Academy, their main teacher being Marc Danel of the Quatuor Danel.
The Dudok Kwartet gave the world première of Julius Röntgen’s Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra in Olomouc in the Czech Republic, followed by concerts in the Netherlands. Also, many well-known contemporary classical composers, such as Kaija Saariaho, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Calliope Tsoupaki and Max Knigge worked with the Quartet on their repertory pieces. The Dudok Kwartet gave concerts at the Gergiev Festival (Rotterdam), the Grachten Festival (Amsterdam) the NJO Muziekzomer and the Linari Classic Festival. They have also performed in most of the well-know Dutch concert venues, such as the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), the Concert Hall of the 21st Century and the Philips Hall in Eindhoven.
The Dudok Kwartet is laureate (1st prize) of both the 1st International String Quartet Competition 2011 in Radom (Poland) and of the Charles Hennen International Chamber Music Competition 2012.
